Blogger Mourns Death of Knoxville-Born Actor

I am so devastated. My once-future husband, Brad Renfro, was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment yesterday. I don't think the cause of death has been determined yet, but based on his history, I'm guessing it had something do to with drugs, probably heroin.

Why do I refer to him as my once-future husband, you might ask. Well, for about six months, in 1997, I was obsessed with Brad Renfro. I mean, literally OBSESSED. Which led me to do a number of things that I'm not proud of, but which I feel should be shared in memory of Brad.

1. In 1995, Brad had appeared in the Disney movie Tom and Huck with Jonathan Taylor Thomas (who would have been a heartthrob, had he not stopped growing at the age of eleven). During the spring semester of my freshman year of high school (1997), I bought a copy of this movie and watched it every single day when I got home from school. I usually rewinded Brad's scenes three or four times.

2. I spent hours on the Internet, trying to learn every single thing I could about Brad, so that, in the off-chance I ever "ran into him," we would have something to talk about. I resolved to watch A Clockwork Orange (which, according to the Internet was his favorite movie), so that we could discuss it when we met. Note: I still haven't seen that movie.

3. I printed endless pictures of Brad from the Internet, which I pasted onto all of my notebooks, for maximum viewing pleasure during class.

4. I forced my dad to drive me across town so that we could "cruise" the house where Brad grew up. Oh, and I got his address by searching through old phonebooks (from before he became famous).

5. I relentlessly badgered a girl in my English class, who claimed to have smoked weed with Brad on numerous occasions. Who knows whether she actually had, but she thought my Brad-covered notebooks were hilarious. She was probably high.

Do you believe me now, when I say that I was obsessed?

I guess we'll never know what could have been....

We refer to those as the "dark" days of Candy.

That was funny. I can relate a lot. Except I'm not from TN and on a family trip down south I made my parents go to Knoxville and all the places mentioned as having to do with Brad in Knoxville. We even actually SAW Brad but I was too shocked to say anything and he got into a vehicle before I came to my senses.

Very sad he's gone.

One year at the UT homecoming parade Brad was participating on one of the floats and I gave him a shoutout - something like "Hey Brad, over here" and he looked to find who it was and threw me a couple handfuls of candy. He seemed happy that someone recognized him. I hoped he would become a success and have a good career but sadly that didn't really happen. -AB

Candy, I had no diea you once liked him so much! In college I was out with Michelle D., and your beloved Brad was sitting at the table next to us at some bar in the Old City (Spicy's, I think?) He was REALLY drunk and acting like an idiot, poor guy. I was sorry to hear about what happened, that's really tragic. He had alot of potential. Anyway, just wanted to tell you that Michelle and I sat right next to him, and that was when you and I were both living in Greve! You should have been with us that night.

This post (Jan. 26) is belated in relation to the topic, but as I mentioned last night, I haven't read your blog in awhile..(sorry). (BTW; It was nice to see you, Teeny, and L.B. out last night. Haven't seen you in months??...) I was at Brad's funeral last Monday night. (I won't explain, on this forum, my connection or reason for being there.) While any death at such a young age is tragic, what really had people (in attendance) so shocked and upset was that he, within the last few months, really seemed to have gotten his "act together". (Most worried for years, that Brad's funeral would have taken place long before now.)... Jesse Hasek (lead singer for the rock band "10 years") was a pallbearer and said that Brad, (and his son), was just in Knoxville over the holidays and stayed with him and his family. Jesse stated (and I quote): "Brad appeared to be at the best 'place' he has ever been in his life and the happiest I have ever seen him"... Just goes to show you what a wicked, and unpredictable, beast addiction and/or depression can be... (May be what took Heath Ledger's life as well...)... See ya soon, G
